Greenwich Observatory and Maritime Museum
Year 5 visit to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.
Children visited the galleries displaying information about our solar system, some of which were visual and some interacitve. Then they had the opportunity to visit planetarium where they could see a projection of the night sky and learnt lots of interesting facts about the stars and planets.
They also went to the Maritime Museum where, they were led through to a life sized model of a ship and took part in different activities. They looked at the navigation systems, tried to communicate in Morse code and got a chance to steer a lifeboat on the simulator. They had the opportunity to see Meridian Line – the line that separates the Eastern and Western hemispheres and stand with one foot on each side.
